Hazina DT SACCO has strengthened its position among Kenya’s leading employer-based cooperative societies after receiving two prestigious awards during the 2026 International Ushirika Day celebrations held in Nairobi.

The Sacco was named 2nd Best DT SACCO in Technology Optimization and 2nd Best DT SACCO in Member Management in the category of employer-based Saccos with total assets ranging between Ksh 10 billion and Ksh 30 billion.

The accolades are a strong endorsement of the Sacco’s strategic direction, recognizing its commitment to digital transformation, operational excellence, and exceptional member service. More significantly, they validate the institution’s impressive performance in 2025, a year marked by strong financial growth, expanding membership, and a renewed focus on sustainable development.

The awards come just months after Hazina DT SACCO outlined an ambitious roadmap during its 42nd Annual Delegates Meeting, where Chairman Evans Kibagendi challenged the institution to pursue a bold vision of attaining a Ksh 25 billion asset base while strengthening governance, embracing technology, and attracting younger members into the cooperative movement.

The Sacco’s recent performance demonstrates that this ambition is firmly grounded in results. Since 2018, Hazina Sacco has grown its asset base from Ksh 7.9 billion to at least Ksh 19 billion, creating more wealth over the last six years than during its first 47 years of operation. Membership has also surged from 18,400 to more than 35,000, reflecting growing confidence among members and the public.

In 2025 alone, total assets increased from Ksh 12.8 billion to Ksh 18.7 billion, while the loan portfolio expanded to Ksh 12.9 billion and member deposits rose to Ksh 13.9 billion. These achievements have been driven by strategic branch expansion, operational efficiency, prudent financial management, and continued investment in digital solutions.

The Technology Optimization award particularly reflects Hazina Saco’s successful digital transformation agenda. The Sacco has transitioned from web-based services to a fully-fledged mobile application, enabling members to conveniently apply for loans, access accounts, and transact remotely. The digital shift has enhanced efficiency, improved service delivery, and strengthened the overall member experience.

Equally significant is the recognition for Member Management, which highlights Hazina Sacco’s deliberate efforts to place members at the centre of its operations. Through continuous engagement, improved accessibility, and targeted membership recruitment initiatives, the Sacco has cultivated strong member loyalty while steadily expanding its membership base. Outstanding branch and individual recruiters have also been recognized internally, reinforcing a culture of growth and accountability.

Even as it celebrates these milestones, Hazina Sacco continues to focus on the future. During the Annual Delegates Meeting, leaders acknowledged emerging priorities, including attracting young people into the cooperative movement, strengthening customer experience through enhanced ICT support and a dedicated call centre, and reinforcing cybersecurity as digital financial services continue to evolve.

The Sacco has also maintained a strong governance culture, with the Supervisory Committee affirming the institution’s sound financial position, robust internal controls, and commitment to transparency. Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Cooperatives encouraged the Sacco to continue strengthening capital adequacy and cyber resilience to safeguard future growth.

The twin Ushirika Day awards therefore represent more than ceremonial recognition. They affirm that Hazina DT SACCO’s investment in technology, people, and prudent governance is delivering measurable results. As the cooperative advances towards its Ksh 25 billion asset target, the national honours provide further evidence that sustainable growth is achieved through innovation, member trust, and visionary leadership.

With a rapidly expanding membership, a growing asset base, enhanced digital platforms, and a clear strategic vision, Hazina DT SACCO continues to demonstrate that the future of Kenya’s cooperative movement lies in embracing innovation while remaining firmly anchored in member value.
