The Kenya Teacher’s Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies Association (KETSA) has launched the KETSA Alternative Investment Fund, marking a significant step towards expanding investment opportunities for Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOs) and strengthening the long-term financial sustainability of the cooperative movement.
The fund, officially unveiled during a ceremony attended by cooperative leaders, regulators and industry stakeholders, is expected to provide professionally managed investment solutions that will enable SACCOs to diversify their portfolios, improve returns and access investment opportunities that would be difficult to pursue individually.
Speaking during the launch, KETSA Chairman Robert Njue described the fund as a landmark initiative that reflects the association’s commitment to innovation and prudent investment for the benefit of its member SACCOs.
“Today marks a significant milestone in our journey towards enhancing investment opportunities and wealth creation for our member SACCOs and their members,” Njue said.
He noted that the fund has been established to provide a professionally managed investment vehicle that will allow cooperative societies to optimize returns while promoting collective growth, long-term value creation and greater financial resilience.
“As an association representing SACCOs across Kenya, KETSA has remained committed to strengthening the financial sustainability of our members through innovation, collaboration and prudent investment strategies. The launch of this fund is a testament to that commitment,” he added.
Njue acknowledged the institutions that partnered in establishing the fund, thanking the Cooperative Bank of Kenya for serving as trustee and custodian and ensuring sound governance and the protection of investors’ assets. He also commended the appointed investment bank and fund manager for providing the professional expertise needed to manage the fund while maintaining high standards of accountability and regulatory compliance.
He said the successful establishment of the fund demonstrates what can be achieved when institutions work together with a shared vision, expressing confidence that it will strengthen the financial position of member SACCOs while contributing to the broader transformation of Kenya’s cooperative sector.
The launch received strong backing from the Principal Secretary in the State Department for Cooperatives, Patrick Kilemi, who challenged SACCO leaders to embrace strategic investment, strengthen governance and place members’ interests at the centre of every decision.
Kilemi emphasized that the primary mandate of every SACCO is to serve its members, urging leaders to remain accountable and avoid allowing financial influence to dictate leadership or investment decisions.
“We need to focus on the interests of our members because that is the foundation of building strong and financially stable institutions,” he said.
The Principal Secretary observed that the changing economic environment requires SACCOs to move beyond traditional operations by embracing long-term planning and professional investment management. He encouraged cooperative societies to develop five-year strategic plans that would position them for sustainable growth while enhancing institutional stability.
Further, he urged SACCOs to strengthen governance structures, invest in professional management and fully comply with regulatory requirements to safeguard members’ savings and improve accountability.
Kilemi also encouraged cooperative societies to leverage partnerships with established capital market institutions to diversify their investment portfolios and generate better returns for members, describing the KETSA Alternative Investment Fund as an important platform that can unlock new opportunities for the sector.
The launch of the fund comes at a time when Kenya’s cooperative movement is increasingly seeking innovative investment avenues to preserve members’ wealth, improve returns and build resilience in an evolving financial landscape.
With professional fund management, institutional oversight and a collective investment approach, stakeholders expressed optimism that the KETSA Alternative Investment Fund will provide SACCOs with a sustainable pathway to diversify investments, enhance value for members and contribute to the continued growth of the cooperative sector.
