In Kilifi County, cooperative societies have emerged as crucial drivers of economic and social development, particularly for small and medium businesses. The County Executive Committee Member (CEC) for Tourism, Trade and Cooperative Development, Hon. Clara Chonga, highlighted the significant strides made by cooperative movements, attributing the success to a collaborative effort between the county government and the Sacco sector.
Over the past year, there has been a notable surge in the registration of cooperative societies, reaching a total of 196 active entities. These cooperatives boast a combined wealth exceeding 15 billion, indicating a promising trend towards overall prosperity in the region.
During the annual delegates meeting of Imarika Sacco, the largest in the county, The CEC member emphasized the importance of adhering to the principles of cooperatives. These principles include open and voluntary membership, member economic participation, autonomy, education, cooperation among cooperatives, concern for the community, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
“By embracing these principles, you can ensure that everyone benefits from the SACCOs’ success and that it continues to grow sustainably,” she advised.
Under the devolved structure of the Sacco movement, the county government plays a pivotal role in ensuring that these principles are ingrained at all levels, from the executive cadre to grassroots members.
Chonga underscored the government’s commitment to providing governance and support to the Sacco sector, pledging unwavering assistance to foster sustainable growth.
Imarika Sacco received special recognition for its remarkable achievements, ranking eleventh in profitability and sixteenth in terms of asset base among Kenyan Saccos. The Sacco’s contribution to the community was further highlighted when it offered its headquarters complex to house the county cooperative directorate during office renovations, demonstrating a strong partnership between the Sacco and the county government.
As cooperative societies continue to thrive in Kilifi County, stakeholders are urged to prioritize the fundamental principles that underpin their success. By embracing cooperation, economic participation, and community concern, the county aims to ensure inclusive growth and sustainable development for all members.
