Kitui County has deployed appropriate policies and regulation and further provided continuous training to the members as a way to bring more people on board in order to ensure the members understood the benefits of cooperatives and salvage struggling societies, Mr. Sammy Musomba, Kitui County Cooperative Director has stated.
“We are holding workshops to capacity build our members and also ensuring provision of good policies in the county for the benefit of the cooperative movement in the long run.” Said Musomba.
Speaking during the Cooperative Alliance of Kenya (CAK) meeting that brought together differentindustry players, Mr. Musomba said in the past, only a few cooperatives were registered with quite a number of them currently in a state of dormancy.
“Kitui County has recently witnessed an upward surge in the growth of the number of cooperatives. We have around 346 registered cooperatives and we are working to ensure we revive the dormant ones.” He stated.
The Director however linked the disappearance of the societies’ management and the withdrawal of donor support as some of the various reasons that led to the fall of some of the societies.
Speaking on the efforts to bring the youth into the movement, the county cooperative director stated that quite a number of the bodaboda sector were coming on board while the Agri- SACCOs were lagging behind since a majority of the young people dreaded working on the farm thus being held by the older generation.
“We need to have a succession plan before the older generation gets old. The youth should also be included in the management of such SACCOs to ensure continuity.” He encouraged.
Mr. Musomba additionally stated that the county had provided County Youth Funds which the youth can apply through the cooperative societies and receive within a time period of 1-2 weeks once the applications go through vetting to enable them grow their businesses.
