For decades, Mentor DT Sacco has built its reputation on a simple but powerful promise: creating lasting financial value for its members through prudent leadership, innovation and unwavering commitment to cooperative excellence. Today, that commitment continues to earn national recognition, positioning the Murang’a-based institution among Kenya’s leading deposit-taking SACCOs and reaffirming its role as a trusted financial partner transforming the lives of thousands of members.

Murang’a County’s reputation as one of Kenya’s strongest cooperative hubs received further affirmation after Mentor DT Sacco emerged among the top-performing deposit-taking SACCOs during the 2026 National Ushirika Day celebrations in Nairobi.

The SACCO posted an impressive performance in the national awards, taking first position in Best DT Sacco in Member Management among employer-based SACCOs with total assets between Ksh 10 billion and Ksh 30 billion. It also secured third position in Best DT Sacco in Technology Optimization and third position as the Most Improved DT Sacco in the same asset category.

The national recognition came on the heels of another remarkable achievement at the Murang’a County Ushirika Day celebrations, where Mentor DT Sacco was honoured with the award for Highest Interest on Members’ Deposits. The recognition speaks directly to the cooperative’s ability to translate strong financial performance into tangible benefits for its members by rewarding their savings with competitive returns.

It reflects prudent financial management, sustainable profitability and a member-first philosophy that lies at the heart of the cooperative movement, where success is measured not only by institutional growth but by the wealth created for members.

The accolades complement the Murang’a County Governor’s message, delivered by the County’s CEC for Agriculture and Trade Hon. Paul Mugo, during the County’s Ushirika Day Celebrations, where Governor Dr. Irungu Kang’ata described cooperatives as key drivers of economic empowerment, social cohesion and sustainable development.

“Cooperatives are not merely economic institutions. They are powerful vehicles for social cohesion, economic empowerment and inclusive development,” the Governor said, noting that strong cooperative societies remain central to the county’s economic transformation agenda.

Mentor DT Sacco’s recognition in member management reflects the growing importance of placing members at the centre of cooperative business. The award demonstrates the SACCO’s commitment to delivering quality services, strengthening member engagement and maintaining a governance model that prioritizes members’ needs.

The recognition in technology optimization also highlights the Sacco’s investment in digital innovation to improve efficiency, enhance service delivery and provide members with convenient financial solutions in an increasingly digital economy.

Being ranked among the country’s most improved employer-based deposit-taking SACCOs further underscores the institution’s steady growth and continuous efforts to enhance its performance in a highly competitive cooperative sector.

The achievements mirror the priorities outlined by the Murang’a County Director of Cooperative Development, Ms. Mildred Mwangi, during the county celebrations. The Director emphasized that well-governed, innovative and member-focused cooperatives are critical to building sustainable institutions capable of transforming livelihoods.

“The cooperative model demonstrates that peace begins with economic empowerment. When people have access to markets, affordable financial services, decent incomes and equal opportunities, they become active contributors to stable and peaceful communities,” the Director said.

She further called on cooperative societies to embrace digitization, innovation, good governance and value addition while encouraging members to actively participate in the affairs of their societies through savings, patronage and democratic participation.

Mentor DT Sacco’s national recognition demonstrates how these principles translate into measurable success. Its excellence in member management reflects a strong governance culture, while its progress in technology optimization aligns with the county’s vision of modernizing cooperative services through digital transformation.

As Murang’a County continues investing in agriculture, value addition, industrialization and cooperative development, the success of institutions such as Mentor DT Sacco reinforces the county’s standing as a leader in Kenya’s cooperative movement.

The Sacco’s performance at the national Ushirika Day awards not only celebrates its institutional achievements but also showcases the strength of Murang’a’s cooperative ecosystem, where innovation, sound governance and a member-first approach continue to drive inclusive economic growth and improve the livelihoods of thousands of families.
