MCCDC Partners with Directorate of Cooperatives, Donates Food to Likoni School for the Visually Impaired Amidst the Biting Hunger

The Mombasa County Co-operatives Development Committee (MCCDC) in partnership with the Directorate of Cooperatives on Saturday June 24th, donated food and other supplies to Likoni School for the Visually Impaired as a way of alleviating the biting hunger in the institution.

MCCDC as per its annual schedule, commonly done through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), normally conducts visits to such identified special schools once a year to support the learners through provisions and thus made a major comeback to the school after their last visit to the institution in the year 2015.

Flagging off the donations to Likoni School for the Visually Impaired, MCCDC chair, Madam Alice Jowi acknowledged the teachers’ commitment and support in fostering the welfare of the learners, consequently noting that it takes a lot of commitment and dedication to keep learners with special needs in school and a lot of effort as well to handle them despite their small population.

“For you to handle children with special needs, it requires a lot of work, even for a number like 200, compared to a school with 1000 children. It takes a lot of determination.” Madam Jowi stated.

Additionally, she further hinted that MCCDC was committed to enhancing charity work in different institutions and will continue channeling support to the less privileged in the society over and over.

Ms. Jowi, also thanked the parents for bringing the learners to an institution that enables them acquire the education they require notably stating that despite being challenged physically, they are normal just like any other child and only abled differently.

Also present at the event was the Mombasa Director of Cooperatives Mr. Nelson Nyoro, who expressed gratitude to the county’s cooperatives fraternity for coming out in numbers and throwing in their support through donations and immense contribution to the learners to keep them in school.

“Speaking at a personal level and also on behalf of the cooperatives who have shown generosity, it is possible to do good.” Nyoro stated.

He then went forward and committed to pay school fees worth Ksh. 15,000 to one of the learners, affirming that when given an opportunity to do good and especially at a personal level, one should grab the opportunity.

Director Nyoro further highlighted that such forums, were an eye opener to individuals as they enable one to gauge their personal contributions and backing in the society. He however noted that the county will streamline its efforts to encourage further contributions to such activities and that plans were underway to ensure that the initiative is conducted from sub-county to sub-county and various
stakeholders brought on board to provide a better environment and care for the learners.

The school’s principal, Madam Elizabeth Ngare, could however not hide her joy, evidently witnessed in her emotional speech. She appreciated MCCDC and the cooperative society for their enormous and unmatched gesture, and for taking time off to mingle with the children.

Speaking on collaboration and teamwork, she went ahead and applauded the learners’ parents and her subordinate staff for always standing by her, providing the needed support in the effort to establish a friendly and homely learning environment for the learners despite the various challenges the institution faced.

Madam Ngare, further expressed confidence and showered praise to the learners, whom despite their physical inabilities, she said had various unimaginable talents within them adding that most of them were extremely good in extra-curricular activities.
