As the sacco movement celebrated the 101st International Cooperative Day, popularly known as “Ushirika Day” in Kenya on 1st July in different parts of the globe, Alarms Sacco, one of the most progressive and transformative saccos at the coastal city of Mombasa, marked almost three decades of touching and revolutionising members’ lives.
Since its establishment in 1994, where the Society was worth just about Ksh. 20 million shillings, Alarms Sacco, today has grown to a tune of over Ksh. 170 million shillings under the competent leadership of its CEO Mr. Ben Bynito and its Chairperson Mr. Milton Mukhutsi.
Over the years, the society has witnessed incredible transitions among them being the complete shift of its operations from the manual systems to the digital world. Unlike previously where service rendering was faced with various difficulties, Alarms Sacco has today refined its processes and reconciled its records, making its operations extremely seamless and timely, serving members effectively and efficiently.
The notable development of Alarms Sacco, led to it moving from under the wings of the commissioner for cooperatives to the hands of the regulatory authority, SASRA, a move the CEO says has greatly helped increase members’ trust in the society since the regulator has been walking side by side with the sacco, guiding it on matters effective governance and appropriate use of members’ funds.’
“We are proud to say the society has so far assisted numerous members build homes for their families, start retirement ventures and educate thousands of members’ children to the highest level of education.” Stated Bynito.
Compared to the past where the society’s direct impact on members’ lives was minimal due to it’s small size, Alarms Sacco is today phenomenally positively altering lives and livelihoods and is on the right trajectory to soon joining the coastal based giant societies.
During this year’s Ushirika Day celebration at Mkomani Show Ground Mombasa, where Mombasa based cooperatives and cooperators gathered to commemorate this special day, network and learn from one another, Alarms Sacco joined the rest in stunning pop and colour to honour the outstanding achievement made by the movement in the last 101 years.
“Despite this year’s celebrations being characterized by unending rainfall that almost disrupted everything, members were determined to acknowledge the day and ensured the event was appropriately observed as it is supposed to.” Said the CEO.
Speaking on the tough economic times, Mr. Bynito hinted that his society had restructured and retailored its products and services to better serve the members’ changing needs
“We are today listening to our members more than we used to because we are in such times that members need saccos more than ever to help them address their needs,” he emphasized.
The CEO also added that Alarms Sacco’s core objective is to better members’ lives thus it is everyday striving to innovate creative ways to aid members’ financial development and freedom, while in the process encouraging them to keep saving and investing in the society.
He further called upon the young people to embrace the sacco world stating that it was one of the most effective institutions they can invest in and build something for themselves. He urged the youth to capitalize on the digital revolution presently taking place in most saccos to join and start saving and investing in themselves and in their future in the comfort of their homes using their smartphones.
“Most young people are products of the sacco societies. Many of them have been educated by saccos and they ought to know how important and beneficial being part and parcel of any society is.” He encouraged.
Moreover, he stressed that it really doesn’t matter how much one earns, everyone has the opportunity to join any sacco of their choice and begin mapping out ways in which they are going to turn their lives and those of their families around.
“The amount of tremendous growth and development people in sacco societies are able to achieve is remarkable. It is only in saccos that one is sure of making the unimaginable strides in life and no one, especially the young people should in their lifetime afford to miss this spectacular opportunity.” Urged Alarms sacco CEO Mr. Bynito.
