Imarika DT SACCO reinforced its standing as one of Kenya’s leading deposit-taking cooperative societies after emerging the most top performer during the 2026 International Day of Cooperatives (Ushirika Day) celebrations in the county level clinching five prestigious awards that underscore its commitment to innovation, sound governance and member empowerment.

At the celebrations held under the theme “Building Bridges: Cooperative Contribution for a Peaceful World,” the SACCO was crowned Most Innovative Cooperative Society, Best Cooperative in Education and Training, and Best in Risk Management. It was announced the best managed DT Sacco in Kilifi County and the best Sacco with the highest interests on member’s deposits, making it one of the most decorated institutions at this year’s awards.

The honours reflect an institution that has consistently combined strong financial performance with a member-first approach, earning the confidence of thousands of members across the Coast region and beyond.

The Most Innovative Cooperative award recognizes Imarika DT SACCO’s continued investment in modern technologies and customer-centered financial solutions that have improved efficiency, convenience and accessibility of services. As financial services increasingly shift into the digital space, the SACCO has embraced innovation as a key driver of competitiveness and sustainable growth.

Its recognition as Best Cooperative in Education and Training highlights a long-standing commitment to equipping members, delegates, directors and staff with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed financial decisions and strengthen cooperative governance. Through continuous training and financial literacy programmes, the SACCO has nurtured a knowledgeable membership that actively participates in shaping the institution’s future.

Equally significant was the Best in Risk Management award, which reflects the SACCO’s prudent financial controls, sound governance systems and effective credit management. Strong risk management remains critical in protecting members’ savings and ensuring the long-term stability of financial cooperatives.

The awards come on the back of an impressive financial year that demonstrated the SACCO’s resilience despite a challenging economic environment.

For the 2025 financial year, Imarika DT SACCO increased its total earnings by 10 per cent to KSh2.48 billion, while total assets grew by 11 per cent, reinforcing its position as one of the fastest-growing deposit-taking SACCOs in the region. Loan interest income also rose by 12 per cent, reflecting increased lending activity and sustained confidence from members.

The SACCO also strengthened its credit quality, improving its Portfolio at Risk (PAR) to 5.2 per cent, an indication of disciplined lending practices, effective loan recovery strategies and robust internal controls.

Beyond financial growth, Imarika DT SACCO has continued to demonstrate that cooperative success is measured not only by profits but also by the impact it has on members’ lives.

During the period under review, the society settled dozens of deceased members’ insurance claims amounting to several tens of millions, providing timely financial support to bereaved families and reaffirming the cooperative principle of caring for members and their dependants during difficult times.

The SACCO’s governance structures have also remained strong. The election of several dozens of delegates reflected the confidence that members continue to place in the current leadership and its strategic direction.

Looking ahead, Imarika DT SACCO is positioning itself for continued growth in a rapidly changing financial landscape. Its strategic agenda focuses on accelerating digital transformation to enhance member experience, expanding its branch network to bring services closer to members, and investing in sustainable operations through initiatives such as solar energy installations to reduce operating costs and improve efficiency.

These forward-looking investments are expected to strengthen the SACCO’s competitiveness while ensuring that members continue to receive affordable, innovative and reliable financial services.

The 2026 Ushirika Day theme resonates strongly with Imarika DT SACCO’s journey. By mobilizing savings, extending affordable credit, investing in financial education and promoting responsible governance, the cooperative continues to build bridges of economic opportunity, social inclusion and shared prosperity among its members and the communities it serves.

The multiple Ushirika Day victory is therefore more than a collection of trophies. It is a recognition of years of disciplined leadership, prudent financial management, innovation and unwavering commitment to the cooperative ideals of self-help, democracy and mutual support.

As Kenya’s cooperative movement continues to drive financial inclusion and community development, Imarika DT SACCO’s latest achievements stand as a powerful example of how a member-owned institution can grow sustainably while remaining true to its mission of transforming lives through cooperation.
