Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives, Hon. Simon Chelugui recently hinted that the government has put in measures to enhance the transformation of the Blue Economy by converting Beach Management Units along the coastal lines and the lake side into cooperatives societies.
Addressing Ports Sacco members and invited guests in Mombasa during the relaunch of Mombasa Port Sacco to Ports Sacco, Chelugui added that currently 449 BMUs had already been identified with six registered in Mombasa County.
He stated that a team had been deployed to identify the BMUs and bring them on board to enhance the growth and development of the sector and revealed that he would soon call a meeting together with all the CECs in charge of Trade and Cooperatives to align government’s agenda and foster good partnership and cooperation with the county governments.
“Whether we are in the national or the county government, we are working for the same people. The real power of intergovernmental relationships is when Co-operatives and SMES are working together. That’s the future and the way to go,” the CS noted.
The CS further stated that the move was aimed at inculcating a saving culture, promoting education of children and creating a successful and enabling environment for the members by maximizing the BMU space.
Plans, he also said, were underway to enhance the growth of cotton in Kwale County which is identified as a cotton supporting zone. This he said would support the Bottom-up economic model and his agenda of developing a cotton machinery. A move he noted as transformative that will uplift the livelihood of the residents of Kwale County.
He further called upon the stakeholders in the cooperative world and the county executives to work together to ensure the success of the projects at hand, stressing that cooperatives contributed a larger percentage in the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
