In a bid to ignite economic transformation from the grassroots level, the county government, in collaboration with sacco societies, are driving the cooperative movement aimed at uplifting the socio-economic status of Kilifi County residents.
During an annual delegates meeting (ADM) convened by Imarika Sacco recently, Hon. Florence Mbetsa, Deputy Governor of Kilifi County, reaffirmed the county government’s commitment to partnering with the cooperative movement to enhance the livelihoods of its citizens.
The cooperative movement has gained significant traction in Kilifi County, with an increasing number of residents turning to saccos for financial solutions. Recognizing the potential of cooperatives in fostering economic growth, the county government has launched initiatives such as the WEZESHA fund, which provides affordable business credit to youth and women-led enterprises.
“Empowering women and youth through access to affordable credit is a cause close to our hearts. That’s why as a county we came up with the Kilifi County Micro Finance (WEZESHA) Fund aiming to spar self-employment among our youthful population,” said the deputy governor.
Addressing delegates at the ADM meeting, the Deputy Governor emphasized the pivotal role of saccos in Kilifi’s economic and social development agenda. She highlighted the government’s support for cooperative societies and underscored the importance of transparency and accountability in their governance structures.
Imarika Sacco, hailed as the largest and most progressive sacco in Kilifi County, has emerged as a catalyst for economic change. The sacco, through its CSR arm, Imarika Foundation, has implemented various development programs and social welfare schemes, including offering scholarships to underprivileged students.
“Education, just like affordable credit, is a cornerstone of our county’s development. We are dedicated to improving its access and quality, and I commend Imarika Sacco for the valuable contribution through the Imarika Foundation. The scholarships for underprivileged students and projects focusing on health and environment are truly inspiring. These align perfectly with our vision for transforming key sectors in our county,” the deputy governor said.
The cooperative movement’s philosophy revolves around empowering grassroots communities, particularly youth and women, through economic development projects and educational initiatives. The Deputy Governor commended Imarika Sacco for its transparent governance practices and encouraged other saccos to emulate its example.
